Film formers

The term film former is more common in hair cosmetics, but also as an ingredient of skin creams, nail polish and hair spray.

Film formers are natural or synthetic polymers that protect hair, skin and nails through the formation of a coherent structure. The keratin contained in hair, skin and nails is susceptible to cracking without protection, the structure can be destroyed by external influences and the keratin can be broken down. Hair is then dry and brittle. In addition, film formers are also ideal for fixing hairstyles or improving combability. They form a protective film and smooth the natural cuticle of hair. This protects hair and prevents moisture from entering. So the hairstyle persists even in humid weather and can defy the weather conditions.

Film formers can be cationic, anionic and nonionic. In addition, they have an antistatic effect and prevent annoying charging of hair.

Film formers can also be silicones. It is important to ensure that these are water-soluble. The permanent use of non-water-soluble film-forming agents is not recommended, as these form a protective layer around hair, but also no nutrients or care substances penetrate into the hair structure. Neither the body's own sebum, nor caring substances from hair care products such as conditioner or hair mask can then get into hair inside. Hair would virtually dry out from the inside and lead the missing nutrients to hair breakage and split ends.
