Black Friday, Cyber Monday or even a whole Black Week – the shopping days of the year

Black Friday, which originally comes from the USA, is now also one of our most famous shopping days of the year. But where does this tradition come from and what makes it so special? And why is it called Black Friday?

Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. For most Americans, the day after is a bridging day that rings in the family weekend on the one hand and is the prelude to Christmas shopping on the other. On this Friday, people flock to the streets to shop. The streets are filled with people, which seems like a black mass. The police called this sight and the chaos on this day Black Friday. That's how Black Friday was born. This is at least an interpretation of it. Others say that the merchants were in the black that day with the enormous turnover and Black Friday was born out of it.

In America, Black Friday takes on a different dimension than it does here. People are already queuing up in front of the shops early in the morning or spending the night in front of them. Many merchants open their shops already on Thursday evening for some hours or stay open all night. When the doors open, people stream cheerfully into the shops. There is a very special, exuberant atmosphere.

Black Friday hasn't arrived in Germany in such an extreme state yet, yet almost all online merchants and most stationary shops now take part in Black Friday and advertise with promotions and discounts. Nevertheless the day with us is strongly coined online in the comparison to the USA. Many online shops advertise directly the whole weekend, up to Cyber Monday with offers. By the way, Cyber Monday was born from the fact that Black Friday in America originally took place offline and an alternative to online trading was sought.
